KPA Backstage Tech Program
Step behind the curtain and discover the artistry that brings every production to life. The KPA Backstage Tech Program is a new, hands-on training opportunity designed for students aged 14+ who are curious about the technical and design elements of theatre.
Inspired by industry-based training models, this program offers a comprehensive introduction to backstage production through a series of focused, skill-building modules. Over 20 weeks (mid-September 2026 to March 2027), students will attend weekly 3-hour classes on Tuesdays, developing both practical skills and creative insight into the world of technical theatre.
Throughout the program, students will explore six core areas of backstage production:
- Set Design
- Sound Basics
- Sewing & Costume Construction
- Makeup Design
- Lighting Basics
- Prop Design
Each module runs for three weeks, allowing students to build foundational knowledge and apply their skills through hands-on projects and guided instruction.
What makes this program unique is its season-long, progressive project. As students move through each module, they will contribute to the development of a cohesive production concept, integrating set, sound, costumes, makeup, lighting, and props into one unified vision. This approach mirrors real-world theatre processes and encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and creative ownership.
With small class sizes and personalized instruction, the KPA Backstage Tech Program offers a supportive environment where students can gain confidence, learn practical skills, and explore new creative pathways in the performing arts.
Perfect for aspiring designers, builders, and behind-the-scenes creators, this program opens the door to a whole new side of theatre.
